Anti-Violence Network

History

In March 1997, a group of people came to a lunchtime gathering at the Chaplaincy Centre to talk about issues of violence and existing resources. Following this meeting, a comprehensive list of persons/groups who would potentially be interested in continuing the discussion were invited to subsequent meetings. From these discussions, the name, "The Anti-Violence Network" was adopted. We committed to share information, resources and to work cooperatively to provide education about non-violence awareness. Cathy Bristo/Employment Equity, Cindy Player/SHADO (Sexual Harassment and Anti-Discrimination Office) and Carol Wood/Chaplaincy Centre, met to draft a funding/program proposal for the Network. Elaine Haye, Administrative Assistant in the HRES office maintained all financial records.

This proposal was submitted to the Vice-President of Student Affairs. Dr. Mary Keyes' office provided the start-up funds for the project. Other funds were received through the Campus Safety Grant via SHADO, MUSA, MSU, School of Social Work, Theme School on International Justice and Human Rights, Peace Studies, and OPIRG.

Meetings are now held monthly to plan events and to discuss issues of concern regarding the climate on campus. Following a planning retreat in 2003, a comprehensive effort to secure regular funding was initiated. Annual commitments have been pledged by both Women's Studies and Peace Studies. Other offices, including the VP of Student Affairs, OPIRG and MAPS have indicated their willingness to consider support each year.

In the summer of 2003, the SHADO office was changed to the Office of Human Rights & Equity Services. This office continues to support the work of the A.V.N. An AVN executive structure was proposed at the planning retreat in January 2004.
